M. I. Finley war ein bedeutender Altertumswissenschaftler, der in New York geboren wurde und später britischer Staatsbürger wurde.
Sein Werk über die Geschichte Siziliens ist der erste Band einer ehrgeizigen Chronik, die er gemeinsam mit D. Mack Smith verfasste.
Im Laufe seiner produktiven Karriere veröffentlichte Finley fast 99 Werke mit den Schwerpunkten Alte Geschichte, Griechenland und Rom.
Obwohl er ursprünglich im öffentlichen Recht ausgebildet wurde, widmete er sein Leben der Analyse der sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Aspekte der klassischen Welt.
Er ist weltweit bekannt für seine einflussreiche Studie über die antike Wirtschaft und seine Sicht auf die klassische Zivilisation.
